Cooperative competition: A new way of solving computationally challenging problems in AI and beyond

Progress in solving challenging problems in artificial intelligence, computer science at large and beyond, is driven to a significant extent by competition – regular algorithm competitions as well as comparative performance evaluation against state-of-the-art methods from the literature. A prominent example for this is the satisfiability problem in propositional logic (SAT), an NP-hard problem that not only lies at the foundations of computer science, but also plays a key role in many real-world applications, notably in ensuring the correctness of hard- and software. In this presentation, Holger Hoos argues that it is time to rethink the way we assess the state of the art in solving problems such as SAT and the incentives for improving it. Hoos demonstrates how automated algorithm selection and configuration techniques based on sophisticated machine learning and optimisation methods have fundamentally changed not only the state of the art in solving SAT and many other NP-hard problems, but also provide a natural basis for cooperative competition – a new approach for achieving and assessing progress not merely in solving these problems, but also in the way we approach them as a scientific community.

Linked Data & Solid 2023

Dive into creating interoperability across multiple servers and organizations, on multiple levels. We will learn how to carefully reuse domain models where possible, and how to define your own terms where necessary, according to the latest state of the art in Linked Data. Solid applies Linked Data on personal data management: instead of having to store user data on your own servers, you can rely on a storage provider that speaks the Solid specification. Challenges that can be solved with Linked Data arise from the moment multiple apps read and write from the same storage. Techniques will be discussed to provide cross-app interoperability across open, shared, as well as personal knowledge graphs.

Recommender Systems (DBWRS) 2023

CNRS, GDR MACS and Ecole Centrale Lyon: Data-driven Model Learning of Dynamic Systems

The 5-days Spring School aims at covering the fundamentals of data-driven modeling approaches (ranging from parameter estimation algorithms (PEM and ETFE) and experiment design to model validation) as well as more advanced topics. In this year edition, these advanced topics will pertain to closed-loop identification, to optimal experiment design and to the use of statistical tools (such as the maximum likelihood theory) for learning the dynamics of linear and nonlinear systems. The school consists of a series of lectures and of (computer) exercise sessions.
